THE FOLLOWING DAY he did not come down for breakfast.

Usually, we breakfasted together, because we slept in the same bed, so we could not get up out of bed without disturbing the other. However, I knew that it wasn’t uncommon for husbands and wives to miss each other at the breakfast table. Indeed, often, they might not see each other at all each day until dinner.

But I thought about growing apart from Dorian in that way, and it stabbed me deep inside.

I simply did not know how I would bear that.

Long ago, when I was very young, I’d had very romantic ideas about marriage, and then I’d married Cyril and all of them had been shattered. I had seen to it that I stopped thinking about anything in that starry-eyed way of my youth, that I instead saw marriage as it actually was. A duty for the sake of the preservation of the structure of society.

Even so, even though I despised Cyril and he despised me, some part of me had been gratified by how often he’d come to my bedchamber.

Not because I enjoyed it, because I hated it.

But because it meant I was doing my duty and that he wanted me.

And then, when I had contrived this marriage for Dorian and me, some part of me thought that perhaps, this time, my youthful romantic ideas might be fulfilled.

But this was not to be, it seemed.

No, my lot in life was to be either desired by a man I abhorred or to want a man who did not—could not—want me back.

I went to his bedchamber.

He was still abed, but he wasn’t asleep. He was lying on his stomach, blankets over the swell of his muscular bottom, his back bare. He turned his head away when he saw me come in the door.

I hesitated there. “You must get up.”

“Must I? Why is that?” he said darkly.

“Because… because you simply must. You can’t lie in bed all day.”

“Why can’t I?”

“Because it’s not done.”

He chuckled.

“Dorian, what’s wrong with you?”

“With me? What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing is wrong with me. I am up and moving around and going to breakfast and functioning like a duchess.”

He turned his face then and fixed me with a look, such a look. It seemed as if he looked inside me. “What is wrong with you that you want me, your rapist, in your bed?”

I sputtered. “You are not that.”

“Did you enjoy it out there in the maze?”

I twisted my hands together. “I don’t see why that matters.”

“Didn’t I hurt you? Weren’t you sad and ruined and broken somewhere? What is it? After a man breaks a woman, she decides to settle for him? Some stupid part of your brain thinks that just because I stuck my cock in you, you should give yourself to me permanently?”

My nostrils flared. “I’m not stupid.”

He groaned. He pressed his face into his pillow.

“I’m not.”

“Then,” he said, voice muffled, “tell me why.”

“Because you’re Dorian,” I said. “Because it’s always been you. I was always meant for you.
